The Parish Council and the Planning Process

Carhampton Parish Council plays a consultative role in the planning process. While the Council cannot approve or refuse applications, it is invited by Somerset Council to comment on applications submitted within the parish area. These comments are considered by the Planning Authority, which makes the final decision.

When a planning application is received, it is added to the agenda for discussion at the next Parish Council meeting. The Council considers several factors, including:

  • Impact on local infrastructure, amenities, and services
  • Effect on the character and appearance of the area
  • Compliance with local and national planning policies
  • Environmental considerations and impact on neighbouring properties
  • Public views and representations

Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings and express their views during the public participation section. The Parish Council aims to reflect the interests of the community when formulating its response.

Once discussed, the Council submits its comments to the Planning Authority, who then considers all representations before making a final decision.

To view or comment on a planning application, you can visit the Somerset Council Planning Portal or click the links on the Current Applications page on this website.
